Strengthening Academic Integrity: Tools and Strategies for Higher Education

This one-hour workshop is designed for academic staff seeking practical approaches to promoting academic integrity within their teaching practice. Using Cressey’s Fraud Triangle as an analytical framework, participants will explore the three key elements that contribute to academic misconduct: opportunity, pressure, and rationalisation.

The session begins by examining how academic pressures and institutional practices can create conditions conducive to dishonest behaviour. We’ll then investigate how educational design choices can either increase or reduce opportunities for misconduct, before addressing the rationalisations students commonly employ to justify academic dishonesty.

Throughout the workshop, we’ll demonstrate specific examples where Catalyst IT have supported our clients with to improve academic integrity within their institution.

The workshop combines theoretical understanding with hands-on exploration of practical solutions. By the session’s conclusion, attendees will have developed a clearer understanding of academic integrity challenges and gained confidence in utilising Moodle’s built-in features to create more secure and transparent assessment environments that discourage misconduct whilst supporting legitimate student learning.

Implementing Learning Analytics with Moodle: Practical Solutions for African Higher Education

Participants will explore how learning analytics can address common challenges in African higher education, including large class sizes, diverse student backgrounds, limited face-to-face contact time, and varying levels of digital literacy. We’ll examine practical Moodle implementations that provide actionable insights into student engagement, learning progression, and at-risk identification.

The workshop demonstrates built-in Moodle analytics tools, and third-party plugins suitable for resource-constrained environments. Key focus areas include tracking student participation patterns, identifying early warning indicators for academic support, and using data to inform curriculum decisions and teaching strategies.

Participants will leave with a practical roadmap for implementing learning analytics initiatives that are sustainable, and aligned with their institution’s specific goals and constraints.
